Pasture Management Tips:
By: Karen Hoffman

Last month we covered taking a pasture sample, and promised to discuss how to interpret the results. However, due to the length of this newsletter, we will postpone much of that until next month.

A few people did respond with a very important question - "where do you send a forage sample?". So in case there are others who need to know that, many people send them to the DairyOne laboratory in Ithaca, NY - you can find info at www.dairyone.com.

There are also a number of other labs around - you can find a complete list of accredited labs on the website for the National Forage Testing Association at www.foragetesting.org.

Lastly, the first lesson in reading a forage test result is to look at the nutrients as reported on a dry matter basis. This is the nutrient density after all the water is removed, and is used because it is easier to compare forages on a dry basis than on a wet basis - especially when feeds a very different in their moisture content.
